Rubber Board Launches Campaign To Increase Rubber Production And Productivity

The Rubber Board has launched its 'Resurgence in rubber for Aatmanirbhar Bharath' campaign to increase rubber production and productivity of rubber holdings.

The campaign was inaugurated by Dr K N Raghavan. In his inaugural address, he asked rubber growers to increase production and productivity in the rubber holdings to make India self-sufficient in rubber for domestic requirements. Presently, rubber production is lower than consumption and an increase in demand may lead to large scale imports.

The mass contact programme on the campaign will begin today, the 25th of October 2021. Meetings and training programmes that are part of the campaign will continue up to March 2022. The board is expecting to contact 50,000 farmers through 2,500 online or physical meetings arranged throughout the country. The board proposes many long-term strategies for production and productivity enhancement, such as new planting and replanting for extension of cultivation, replanting of old and senile plantations with high yielding clones and planting of suitable clones in the North-eastern regions.

The board has proposed short-term strategies like promotion of raingaurding, disease management, controlled upper tapping (CUT) and adoption of rubber plantations. It has also commenced a Credit Linked Rubber Plantation Development Plan (CLRDP) supported by the Automotive Manufacturers Association (ATMA) and NABARD to increase rubber production in the coming years.
