Merriam-Webster’s “Word of the Year” is a well-known tradition that allows a glimpse into the minds of Merriam-Webster’s dictionary users. It’s based upon a statistical analysis of words that are looked up in extremely high numbers in their online dictionary while also showing a significant year-over-year increase in traffic. These are the words that have sudden dramatic spikes in lookups because of some political, cultural, or natural event during the year.
