TRIBOLOGY, a greek word, is derived from Tribo meaning “rubbing,” and logy meaning “study of.” Though the term is a recent depiction of previous concepts related to friction, lubrication and wear that has been around from the advent of mankind – from chipping of stones for tools, to generating fire by rubbing wood or striking of flint stones from about 400,000 years ago. Friction is the resisting force at the interface due to the energy losses at the contact interface. Wear, a by-product of friction is a gradual material removal process at the contact.
